Primary Seven Residential Update

Primary Seven arrived safely in Gortatole and quickly got to grips with making their beds—an excellent start to the trip! After enjoying a delicious lunch of pizza, chips, salad, fruit, and a large chocolate chip cookie, the children were divided into three groups for their first activities.

Groups One and Two headed to the lake for kayaking, while Group Three set off to explore the caves. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their first afternoon of adventure.

Following a lovely evening meal, the children took part in team games and special challenges. Teamwork was at the heart of these activities, helping them develop important skills such as communication, cooperation, and consideration for others. Before supper, there was time for a relaxing walk to the lake, where the group skimmed stones and watched the sunset—a perfect end to a busy and exciting day.

Day Two was action-packed, with all three groups experiencing rock climbing, abseiling, archery, caving, and kayaking. After a hearty chicken dinner, the evening continued with more team challenges, including brain teasers and a den-building competition. The day ended with a campfire, where everyone enjoyed entertainment provided by Annie and Sophia before toasting marshmallows.

Day Three began with a quick tidy-up followed by orienteering training. Under clear skies and warm sunshine, the children learned how to read maps before setting off in small groups to complete their final challenge—the orienteering competition.

The children should be extremely proud of their achievements throughout the residential. They made their beds, helped with washing up, kept their rooms tidy, and even took part in cleaning duties on the final day—so there’s no excuse for not helping out at home now!

The staff thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were incredibly proud of the children for conquering fears, working together as teams, and embracing every challenge. Their behaviour was exemplary throughout, showing kindness, good manners, and respect for others.

A huge thank you goes to the staff at Gortatole for providing such a rewarding and enriching experience, ensuring every child felt successful and had a wonderful time.

Finally, this residential would not have been possible without the dedication of the school staff who gave up their own family time to support the children. Special thanks go to Mrs Wright and Mrs Boyle, whose positivity, energy, thoughtfulness, and sense of humour helped make the trip truly memorable for everyone
