Birches Primary School Celebrates Success at the Irish Minor Schools Championships 2026

30th Mar 2026

Birches Primary School is delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievements of Megan McCartney, who represented the school at the Irish Minor Schools Championships 2026 held at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin.

Megan competed in two highly competitive events — the 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly — delivering exceptional performances in both. She recorded personal best times in each race and secured a place in the final of the 50m Butterfly, where she finished an impressive 8th overall. In the 50m Freestyle, Megan placed 14th overall, a remarkable result given the scale and standard of the competition.

The Irish Minor Schools Championships bring together swimmers from primary schools across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, with some Year 8 Junior High pupils also eligible to compete depending on age criteria. Despite being the youngest competitor in her category, Megan rose to the challenge with maturity, determination, and outstanding skill.

A particularly notable highlight comes from Megan’s qualifying times:
Had she been born just a few hours later and competed within her natural school year group, her times would have earned her a Gold medal in the 50m Butterfly and a Silver medal in the 50m Freestyle. This remarkable comparison underscores the exceptional standard of her performances and her potential as a young athlete.

Everyone at Birches Primary School is incredibly proud of Megan’s achievements. Her dedication, discipline, and passion for swimming have been truly inspiring, and her success at a national level is a credit to her hard work and commitment.

Looking ahead, Megan has also secured qualification for the Swim Ireland National Age Group Championships and will travel to Limerick in July to compete. We wish her every success as she continues her sporting journey and know she will represent Birches PS with the same enthusiasm and excellence she has already shown.

Well done, Megan — an exceptional achievement for an exceptional swimmer!
